Spitfires returned to league action this Sunday, having last played back in November. Spitfires entertained the unbeaten league leaders and took the game to the young Ciren team, and it was Spitfires who found the breakthrough on 11 minutes as a long ball over from Natalia Wilson found Mel Britsow who found herself one on one with the keeper and slotted calmly home.
Four minutes later Spitfires found themselves 2-0 up as Georgia Leonard 25 yard shot took a deflection past the Ciren keeper.
Ciren did try to create some chances and pushed on. They were rewarded on 31 minutes as Spitfires failed to clear leaving an easy tap in for the Ciren striker.
10 minutes later the Ciren keeper pulled off a double save from April Polden. However, the resulting corner from Leonard found Bristow who climbed well to head home.
In the second half Ciren came out stronger and Rachel Eley pulled a great save on 50th minutes and the Ciren striker also saw her shot rebound off the post.
On the 70th minute Ciren's second came as Wilson was judged to have fouled the Ciren striker in the box. The resulting penalty was unstopable for Eley.
Spitfires heads dropped and the Ciren equaliser came on 81 minutes.
However, this spurred Spitfires back into action and threw everything at the Ciren defence and two minutes from time Polden's solo run and resulting shot was too much as the Ciren defender deflected the ball into her own net, handing Spitfires all 3 points.
A good first half performance but match fitness did show in the second half, however a good result against the league leaders and a well deserved 3 points.
